Caribbean Elderly Conference in Antigua
On October 13, 2008 Duke University School of Nursing Office of Global & Community Health Initiatives opened its Second Invitational Continuing Education Conference on:Community—Based Prevention and Management of Cardiovascular and Other Chronic Disease Among Caribbean Elderly: A Focus on Nursing Leadership; at the Jolly Beach Resort, Bolans, Antigua. There were approximately 125 participants representing 20 Caribbean countries; a majority of the participants were nurses and the remainder were other professionals who work with the ageing population.
The Ministry of Health, Belize extended an invitation to the N.C.A. to be a participate in this workshop and as a result Ix-Chel Poot the NCA’s Program Officer along with Nurse Marge Parks, Chief Nursing Officer; Nurse Cathrine Godinez, Registrar, Belize Nursing Council; and Nurse Cynthia Guild, Nursing Educator were Belize’s representatives for this conference.
This three day conference was the second in Caribbean-based continuing education conferences in partnership with Duke University School of Nursing. The following recommendations were developed at the end to the conference to form the basis for inter-sectoral action for the management and prevention of chronic diseases in the Caribbean.
- Community-based health programs to include homecare, adult day and night care, low income housing, assisted living, and quality institutional care
- A system of community-based support programs related to the diverse health conditions of the elderly and their caregivers.
- Comprehensive and holistic health education as well as training programs across all health and social service disciplines/professions related to promotion, prevention, and treatment of the elderly
- Safety and adaptive devices in public buildings to ensure accessibility by the elderly.
These recommendations are very pertinent to Belize as they encompass many of the areas which need attention and development so that Belizeans can age within a community that is equipped to meet their needs. At the NCA we are committed in supporting and working with all partners and agencies to improve the quality of life of older persons in Belize.
